Hi vinirv,
welcome to AppImage!

Generally you can use any of the supported distributions to develop AppImages. The most important step is to test the AppImages that you create whether they run on every distribution that you would like to support -- as of this writing, this site aims to support Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) 32-bit, OpenSUSE 11.3 (GNOME) 32-bit , and Fedora 12 (GNOME) 32-bit.

We are generally using Live USB systems, for two reasons:
1. This way we can be sure that nothing has been added/customized and we start with the "plain" OS every time
2. We don't want to keep around installed versions of the three supported distributions

Please be sure to read http://portablelinuxapps.org/docs/1.0/AppImageKit.pdf and post any questions this might leave open. We're happy to hear from you how to improve the documentation.
