GParted (was: AppDirAssistant not working properly)

Postby mr.akik » Fri Jul 22, 2011 10:43 am

I can easily make portable applications without facing any problem. But when I try to make the directory a file using AppImageAssistant , I find the forward button inactive
when it's time to select the directory.Sometimes it works. But most of the time the
forward option goes dead, in spite of clicking the directory created by AppDirAssistant .So, I can't go to the next step.
Please tell me what my problem is.Thanks in advance.

You need an AppRun file, a .desktop file, and an icon file matching to the name of the icon specified in the .desktop file. For example:

AppRun (this is generated by the AppDirAssistant)
appname.desktop (this has the key "Icon=appname", among others)
appname.png

Please zip up the AppDir you are having problems with and upload it to e.g., mediafire.com so that I can help you if required.

How did you create this AppDir? It is missing a lot of things:
1. The AppRun executable (this is what gets executed)
2. The binaries in usr/ need to be patched so that they have no hardcoded "/usr" in them
3. Exec=gksu /usr/sbin/gparted in the .desktop file won't work
4. The libraries in usr/lib are missing

If AppImageAssistant created this, then it didn't run all the way through to the end... probably because this app requires root rights.

I have corrected the above and was able to create an AppImage just fine.
The AppImage must be run as root (e.g., with "sudo" from the command line)!

So I'd say AppDirAssistant *is* working properly ;-)

PS: If you want to compare, unpack with AppImageExtract (it will extract the AppImage to $HOME/Desktop): http://www.mediafire.com/?xkr64x1nn0rntlz
